Trade and sell with clear terms

Agree on the exact items, use consistent comparisons and keep a useful record of the exchange.

Decide what can leave the collection

Check your inventory before listing or offering a trade. Identify duplicates you are willing to part with and items that no longer fit your plan. Mark them separately so a favourite is not offered by mistake.

For a trade, define what you actually want in return. More cards is not automatically a better outcome if they do not fit your collection.

Agree on the exact exchange

  • Items and quantitiesList each card's name, set, full number, language and confirmed version, or the exact sealed product edition. State how many copies are included.
  • Information about the itemsUse accurate descriptions and relevant images of the actual items. Keep known facts separate from unconfirmed claims. Do not promise a future grading result.
  • Comparison basisUse suitable recorded sales on the same basis for both sides: matching identities, currency, time period and treatment of delivery costs.
  • Exchange termsAgree any cash difference, who covers delivery, the shipping method and how issues will be handled before committing. Check the rules of the venue or platform you use.

Practice example — made-up prices

Suppose a suitable comparison gives your card a working value of $30 and the other collector's card $24. A $6 cash difference would balance those chosen values arithmetically.

That does not make the trade automatically worthwhile. Both collectors still need to agree on the exact items, comparison basis, any costs and whether the exchange suits their goals. They can also agree to a straight trade or decline.

A gallery containing several cards should not leave buyers guessing whether they receive one selected card or the whole group. Ensure the title, chosen option, description and photos describe the same offer.

Keep the record useful

Retain the agreed item list, messages, payment record and shipping information through the transaction. Keep delivery or contact details private.

After the exchange, update owned quantities and storage locations. For a sale, record the amount received and selling costs separately from the item's original purchase cost.

Common mistake

Using the highest asking price for your own card and the lowest sale for the other person's. Apply consistent matching rules, make uncertainties explicit and leave room to pass if the terms do not work.
