Version checklist

The same name and number can still be a different version.

Same card, different finish

These cards share the same name, set, collector number and language. Their finish is different.

Checklist

  • Same set?Match the release, using the set name and the printed set symbol or code.
  • Same full card number?Compare the complete collector number, including both sides of the slash where present.
  • Same language?Check the text on the card itself.
  • Same finish?Confirm the finish matches the version you want. The name and number alone may not distinguish it.
  • Any relevant stamps or edition markings?Check these when they apply to the release you’re collecting.

Finish and rarity

Finish describes the card’s surface, such as non-holo or reverse holo. Rarity is a separate classification.

Both Grimer cards above are Common, even though one has a reverse holo finish. A shiny surface alone doesn’t tell you the rarity or value.

When you can't tell

A flat photo or glare can hide the finish. Start with the listing’s existing photos. If they don’t show enough, ask for another angle or a short video of the actual card.

Could you send a photo or short video of the actual card tilted under a light, so I can see the finish?

A stock image shows an example, so it can’t confirm the finish of the seller’s actual card. Leave that detail unconfirmed until you have enough evidence.
